Making Room

Robin Leboe - Saturday, December 10, 2011
God may not come when we want him to, but he always comes right on time!
- Mahalia Jackson

How does Joseph feel when he finds out that Mary is pregnant?

A thousand questions.

Does he notice she is growing?

Does someone let him know?

More urgent, why is God silent allowing Joseph the mistaken pain of discovery?

There is no angelic vision to cushion the blow. Imagine the grinding sorrow of Josephs' prayers.

His agony continues beyond this discovery. "Joseph resolves to divorce her quietly"- to shade her from dishonor. How long does between the dark revelation of an illegitimate child and his kind resolve? A day? A week? A month? Still no rescue from on high. Not a word. Does Joseph need to make this sacrificial decision before the angel puts a song in his heart?

Wow! God's best work permits great anxiety, sorrow- even desolation.Time to reedit my two tone interpretation of how God is at work in my life. Yes, annunciation and 'gloria in excelis deo'. Yes, confusion, pain, uncertainty. Equal evidence that God is at work. Equal fuel for prayer.

What sinks to ocean depths, next flies to the stratosphere. Imagine Joseph's relief and astonishment as the word finally comes. Every cell and neuron vibrates, nearly explodes, with this revealing,

"Do not be afraid. What is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. Give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

From deepest despair to highest joy in timely seconds. More than being consoled or comforted, Joseph is fairly yanked from purgatory to heaven, does get soul bends from rising too quickly?

If the Christmas story applies to each one- it surely does, I need to 'prepare him room' in my heart, to be ready for real pain, glorious joy, long waiting, an abrupt transition.
